A Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony ⭐️is being held today at 9:00am at the new memorial site. All are welcome to attend. The ceremony honors Escambia County Sheriff's Office deputies killed in the line of duty. Next up, registration for the FLORA-BAMA FISHING RODEO has begun! And, in response to yesterday’s JUST ONE DAY in P’COLA: WATER SPORTS, we have additional information on the EAST PARK SNORKELING REEF. And, not to be overlooked… today is National Chocolate Chip Day 🍪 

Fun fact ✅: Chocolate chip cookies🍪were created by accident! Ruth Wakefield, Toll House Inn owner, was short cocoa powder and substituted broken chocolate pieces into her cookie dough, expecting them to melt. Instead, the chocolate chunks remained chunky, resulting in the classic chocolate chip cookie.

PENSACOLA BEACH PARK EAST SNORKELING REEF 🤿

Located just shy of 1.5 miles East of Portofino Resort is Pensacola Beach Park East. The snorkeling reefs are found roughly 500’ offshore nearby the 2nd sand bar. The reefs are approximately 6-9’ below the surface on a calm day.

DIVE PRO’s of Pensacola explain the formation of the reefs:

“The Park East Reef was built in 2011 and is comprised of 19 pairs (38 modules) of Ecosystem by Reefmaker artificial reef modules made in Gulf Shores, AL. They are constructed by attaching a concrete disc covered with limestone to fiberglass pilings which are driven into the sand. The rows are 20-25′ apart and extend about 500′ into the gulf out to the 2nd sand bar. The depth is roughly 12-15′ with the reef modules sitting approximately 6-10′ below the surface. Visibility at the site varies drastically with sea conditions but can be upwards of 30′ when conditions are good and seas are calm. Average visibility is 10-20′. To find the artificial reef, there are orange-tipped, range finding poles placed into the sand at the east side of Park East, and just snorkel straight out. The water depth varies from 12 to 14 feet deep and the tops of the reefs are 6 to 9 feet below the surface.”

DIVE PRO’s also share Important Reef Safety Information:

• Florida law requires use of Divers-Down Flag for diving or snorkeling and divers must make a reasonable effort to stay within 100′ of dive flag.

• No lifeguards on duty. Be aware of boat traffic, hazardous marine life, and potentially dangerous wave action and currents.

• Alway dive with a buddy, NEVER ALONE!

• Personal floatation device or buoyancy aid strongly recommended for snorkelers.

• Snorkelers and Divers should adhere to beach warning flags.

  • GREEN FLAG – Low hazard/Generally calm conditions.

  • YELLOW FLAG – Medium hazard/Moderate surf and/or currents

  • RED FLAG – High hazard/High Surf and/or strong currents

  • PURPLE FLAG – Hazardous Marine Life (generally jellyfish in late summer months)

FLORA-BAMA FISHING RODEO 🎣

Known as “EVERY MAN’s FISHING RODEO”, the annual FLORA-BAMA Annual Fishing Rodeo registration has begun! A broad range of “catch” categories include Spearfishing, Catfish, Billfish and everything in between. “Heck, we'll probably see who can catch the biggest crab before it's all said and done.” This is a “family & friends” event and awards include “top-of-the-line prizes”!
