And, it’s a hot summer day that increases the lure of the sea and the cool Gulf coast waters. The 2025 season has already had a number of tragedies along the Emerald Coast. Discover P’Cola is reminding everyone to take safety precautions while in the waters.

Anyone who is not a strong swimmer should stay onshore. The National Weather Service reports at least 7 lives lost in Florida this year have been due to rip currents, high surf, or sneaker waves**.

• Always swim near a lifeguard

• Take a flotation device with you when entering the water

• Swim to your limits in the open water

• Know your exact location and address

• NOW YOU KNOW ✅: Children under 6 years old are required to wear a USCG-approved life jacket (Type I, II, or III) at all times while on a vessel under 26 feet in length that is underway.

**A sneaker wave, or sleeper wave, is an unexpected wave that surges much farther up a beach and catches people off guard. These waves appear without warning, often within smaller, calmer waves, and can be dangerous due to their force. 

What’s up with the Weather?

Hurricane season could go 0 for June, 2025. For the 1st time in 11 years, there are no June Hurricanes on record in NWFL. However, NOAA is predicting an above- normal Atlantic Hurricane season with a 60% chance above normal and 13-19 named storms. Stay tuned!

GULF COAST RECREATION CLASSIC

SAVE THE DATE 🗓️ : TODAY!

62 All-star teams will participate today in the Gulf Coast Recreation Classic! Teams will be arriving from Escambia County, City of Pensacola, City of Gulf Breeze, Santa Rosa County, and Okaloosa County and consist of youth baseball players ages 7-15. The tournament is open to the public at no charge.

The Gulf Coast Recreation Classic will be hosted by Parks & Recreation at the John R. Jones Ballpark, located at 555 E. Nine Mile Road. The Roger Scott Athletic Complex, located at 2130 Summit Blvd., will be the host for the 10U division games.

The games begin TODAY! June 23 and last until Saturday, June 28. Game times are 5:30 p.m., 7 p.m., and 7:15 p.m. Monday-Friday and Saturday games will begin at 9 a.m.
