The weather forecast is calling for sunny & hot conditions today, perfect for BANDS on the BEACH 🎶 tonight. Johnny Earthquake and the Moondogs 🎶 will be live on the stage.

This weekend, Flora-Bama bar is full of 4th of July events including Bikini Contests and a 4mi Freedom Run.

Summer holidays are a great time to explore Pensacola farmers markets. All the rain this week is keeping the vegetation green! You can expect a large variety of fresh, local produce at the local farmers markets in July:

  • Summer fruits: Cantaloupe, watermelon, peaches, blueberries, blackberries, mangoes, guava, lychees, longan, and passion fruit are typically in season.

  • Summer vegetables: Look for cucumbers, eggplant, squash, sweet corn, cabbage, celery, tomatoes, and bell peppers.

  • Greens: Various types of greens will be available.

  • Other produce: Peas and butterbeans may also be available.

THIS AIN’T YOUR GRANDMA’s BLAND SALAD

Ingredients: (Straight outta the market!)

SUMMERTIME SUNSHINE SUCCOTASH SURPRISE!

  • 1 peck of "Good Lord, look at those!" okra: Slice to about a half-inch thick for those "Okra Kisses" when fried.

  • 3 cups of "Sweet as a whisper in a cornfield" sweet corn kernels: Ideally, still warm from the sun.

  • 1 cup of "Don't you dare forget to chop it" sweet onion: Sweet enough to make anyone weep, in a good way.

  • 1 cup of "Little pops of deliciousness" cherry tomatoes: Halve them..

  • 10 oz of "I could eat these by the handful" fresh or frozen baby lima beans: If frozen, they'll thaw quickly in the heat.

  • 4 slices of "The reason bacon is a gift from above" center-cut bacon: Cook it until crisp, like cicadas in July.

  • 1 garlic clove, finely chopped: Adds a little kick.

  • 1 1/4 tsp kosher salt: To make all those flavors sing.

  • 1/4 tsp black pepper: For pizzazz.

  • 3 tablespoons of "Butter makes everything better" butter: Just a touch.

  • 1/4 cup of "Fresh as a summer breeze" thinly sliced fresh basil: Smells and tastes great.

  • Optional (but highly recommended): A sprinkle of those roasted pecans from the market.

Instructions:

  1. Get that bacon cracklin': Fry bacon in a skillet until crispy. Drain and crumble it, but leave a little bacon grease in the pan.

  2. Sizzle the onions: Add sweet onion to the skillet and let it soften in the bacon drippings.

  3. Toss in the okra and beans: Stir occasionally.

  4. Add the corn and garlic: The corn will release sweetness, and the garlic will give it a nudge.

  5. Season it right: Stir in salt and pepper.

  6. Butter makes it better: Drop in the butter and watch it melt.

  7. Cherry on top (well, tomato on the bottom): Add the halved cherry tomatoes.

  8. Basil finale: Stir in the fresh basil.

  9. Serve it up: Plate the succotash and top it with bacon and optional roasted pecans.

Notes from the Southern Kitchen:

  • Top with grilled shrimp or chicken for a summer supper.

  • Add plenty of bacon! or Add chive butter.

The next Annual Miss Firecracker Bikini Contest is on the 4th! Show up to the Flora-Bama on the day of the contest and come to the registration table in front of the Tent Stage to sign up between 12pm to 2pm.

All contestants must be signed up, registered, and on site no later than 2pm on day of the contest to compete.

All contestants MUST be 21+ to register and compete. Make sure to bring your ID when you come for the contest! All winners must fill out a W9 to receive their prize money.
