May 1st marked the official first day of Sea Turtle Nesting Season; Lights off, Flat sand and Share the Beach. Did you know the sea turtles return to the very beach the were born on to lay their eggs? Or, that only 1 in 1000 of the hatchlings survive? Want to learn more about our local neighbors, the endangered Sea Turtles? Attend the Sea Turtle Baby Shower and Homecoming - another annual P’COLA event!

Also, for all artists and wanna be artists, now is your time to shine! The Artist in Residence Program is currently in the works and now’s your chance to add your creativity to the program design! First meeting May 12th.

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM 🎨

CALLING ALL ARTISTS! Help develop Pensacola’s 1st Artist in Residence Program. A public listening session is set for May 12th at 5:30 p.m. at the City Hall. This is your opportunity to share your creative ideas and support our local artist community. The meeting goals are to gather ideas to jump start a program that celebrates culture while establishing the city of P’COLA as a premier destination for creative expression.

GULF COAST SEA TURTLE WATCH 🐢

LOCAL SEA TURTLES 🐢 The Loggerheads, Greens, Leatherbacks, and Kemp's Ridleys are the most commonly found Sea Turtles in our warm Gulf waters. If you head to the Pier you might be lucky enough to see one while fishing or simply observing the fish below. Sea turtle nesting season, May 1st to October 31st, has begun with turtles coming ashore at night to lay their eggs. Let’s do our part to protect the eggs and nests and honor the flat, dark, clean beach rules:

• LIGHTS OUT - Lights disorient turtles and hatchlings. Use RED LIGHTS or none at all.

• LEAVE ONLY FOOTPRINTS - Remove all personal items and debris. Flatten any holes or man made sand mounds. Keep their path clean.

• SHARE THE BEACH - Avoid nests, marked areas, and avoid along the grass line where the birds lay eggs. Keep you dogs off the restricted beaches!

NOW YOU KNOW ✅ : Five of the world’s seven sea turtle species inhabit the Gulf: Kemp’s Ridley, Green Turtle, Loggerhead, Hawksbill, and Leatherback. ALL OF THESE ARE EITHER ENDANGERED OR THREATENED UNDER THE ENDANGERED SPECIES ACT.

Lights Out At Night On the Beach 🐢 Turtle Nesting Season has begun!

Gulf Coast Turtle Watch, Inc. has made red lights available for visitors and locals at the Pensacola Beach Chamber of Commerce aka Pensacola Beach Visitors Center.
