P’COLA RARE FIND: Junonia (Scaphella junonia)

One of the most famous rare finds among Gulf beachcombers — prized for its beautiful spotted pattern and deep-sea origin.

These shells live offshore in deeper water and only wash up on beaches after strong storms or currents, making them an exciting and uncommon discovery.

Tips for finding rare shells near Pensacola Beach:
✔ Look after storms or strong tides — these events can bring deeper-water shells to shore.
✔ Search early in the morning and around low tide for the best chance at good finds.
✔ Check the swash and wrack lines where wave action leaves treasures behind.

Pensacola Will Soon Look like the Belle of the Ball

Uncle Sam finally decided to share the sugar. As part of a massive $1.2 trillion federal funding package, Escambia County is pocketing $3 million to give South Navy Boulevard the coastal glow-up it’s been praying for since Ivan.

This ain't just a fresh coat of paint; we're talking about a full "facelift" for the gateway to NAS Pensacola, complete with landscaped medians, fancy lighting, and even a turnaround to keep traffic from backing up at the front gate. It’s about time the road to the NAS started looking less, well, ________ , (we’ll let you fill in the blank) and more like the VIP entrance to one of our nations largest Navy training operations, NAS.

Hold onto your Sun Hats! The good news is rolling in faster than a Gulf Coast thunderstorm.

That same $1.2 trillion federal package is dropping a whole lot more than just road money. Three more local "wins" that have us grinning like a catfish in deep water:

  • Blue Angels Hangar Refresh: Congress earmarked $12 million to repair and restore the Blue Angels' hangar at NAS Pensacola. After taking a beating from Hurricane Sally back in 2020, the building was literally held together with netting and prayers. The newly appointed funds ensures our favorite flight team keeps their wings tucked safely at home for years to come.

  • Military Pay Raise: Our local heroes are getting a little extra in their wallets, too. The bill includes a 3.8% basic pay increase for all military personnel. That’s a whole lot of extra shrimp baskets for the folks stationed at NAS Pensacola and NAS Whiting Field.

  • Bolstering the Fleet: Uncle Sam is also looking to grow the Navy family with funding included to add 12,300 active-duty sailors to the U.S. Navy. More boots on deck—means more folks to welcome to our corner of paradise.
